Even Puppy Mill Dogs Need Rescuing

In Defense of (French) Bulldogs

Our latest blog caused quite a stir! We adopted an inexpensive French Bulldog puppy and it made people upset. Some readers didn’t even like the idea of bulldogs at all, and thought they should be banned for abusive breeding practices. That’s a terrible idea! Bulldogs deserve to exist, especially French Bulldogs, and they deserve happy homes no matter where they came from. French Bulldogs in puppy mills were once a big problem in Missouri, but that has changed.

Our controversy got kicked off when one commenter read the article and said:

My point in the response there was to show that people tend to have selective outrage for causes they think are just, while engaging in behaviors that others could consider inhumane. And also, while Missouri did used to be the puppy mill capital of the country, they are no longer. You should check your facts before you spout your opinions, but of course it’s the internet and people are free to be wrong.

Missouri was the nation’s ‘puppy mill capital’ — but advocates fought back

George wasn’t adopted from a puppy mill. He actually came from a breeder who decided that they didn’t want to breed him because he has a wonky eyeball. This wasn’t even a puppy mill situation that she was referencing. Shari’s whole comment there was just one giant virtue signal.

French Bulldogs in puppy mills may be mistreated or not.

Matthew also had an opinion on the matter.

Interesting! Last we checked, a cell phone is a luxury, and one built on the back of child labor to boot.

Of course, the point of this is to point out that people are really just looking for any excuse to complain and to tell others what to do. Zack knows what we mean:

Breeding Bulldogs Isn’t Immoral

The idea behind the commenters on the thread, which you can find by clicking here, is that you shouldn’t buy dogs unless you know where they came from and can verify they came from a puppy mill. Of course, those dogs will still exist, and someone has to take care of them. Calvin was rescued from a puppy mill and then adopted through a rescue foundation. He deserved a chance to have a nice home, which he does with us. We are proud to have adopted Calvin and George. And we here at Frenchie Bull 💩 are proud bulldog owners. Some people don’t think they should exist though, and one social media user gave some pretty bizzare rationale.

Breeding Frenchies isn’t immoral. That’s ridiculous. Choosing not to breed yourself however, is a noble act that is clearly for the best. Frenchies in puppy mills are the least of your issues.

French Bulldogs were created to serve an important purpose. They were trained to hunt rats and provide company to women who worked in factories at the height of the Progressive Era. They are great companions, and are excellent watch dogs. One person even trained one to be an actual protection dog.

An important thing to know also is that not all bulldogs have breathing problems. Yes many do, but some breeders specifically create dogs that have better breathing capability. Our first dog Calvin has a really nice shnoz on him and he breathes just fine.

Some People Are In On The Bulldog Bullsh**

Not everyone was trying to rain on our parade:

We love all bulldogs, it’s just that Frenchies are our favorite. We’ll never stop defending their right to exist! We’ll leave you with one last excellent point:
